Anniversaries present the unique opportunity to examine our past. The leaders who formed our co-ops and this association were visionaries. Their efforts delivered power and unprecedented opportunity to rural Tennessee. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and their accomplishments merit our gratitude and celebration.
TECA is also using this occasion as an opportunity to refine our focus and prepare the association to meet the challenges of the next 75 years through the leadership, advocacy and support we provide.
Many things have changed in the last 75 years. Enhancements in healthcare, communication, technology and transportation would make the world we live in almost unrecognizable to even the most progressive leaders of the 1940s.
Despite these changes, a few things remain true: There is value in working together for a common purpose, and we best serve our co-ops and consumer-owners when we are unified.
Co-op leaders meet at Duck River EMC to form the Tennessee Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
The TECA board votes to establish a job training and safety program to educate lineworkers.
Permanent offices are established and Dr. K. T. Hutchinson is named first general manager.
John Stanford is hired as editor and the first The Tennessee Magazine is published in September.
TECA moves to current office on Sidco Drive.

In matters affecting all member systems, TECA acts as an agent for co-op interests, working with the Tennessee Valley Authority, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and other groups.
Our education and training programs elevate the effectiveness and professionalism of co-op directors and employees, increase workplace safety and prepare co-ops for the rapid changes impacting our industry.
TECA coordinates the Washington Youth Tour, Youth Leadership Summit and 4-H Electric Camp and supports groups such as Future Farmers of America and the Tennessee Council of Cooperatives.
TECA coordinates assistance for Tennessee co-ops following disasters and provides a single point of contact for neighboring states requesting aid. This activity speeds restoration and improves member satisfaction.
