REPORTS TO: Vice President & Chief Financial Officer

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The General Ledger Accountant ensures that the general ledger is accurate, and accounting data is recorded to comply with the requirements of GAAP, TVA, FERC and RUS. Responsible for month end closing processes to include performing functional spreads, account reconciliations and reoccurring journal entries to ensure financial reporting is reliable and timely reported.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Internal Responsibilities — Coordinates with billing and other internal stakeholders to ensure the timely and accurate completion of the monthly financials.  Calculates and records necessary accrual entries.  Performs reconciliations of bank accounts and other reconciling processes to ensure the accurate and timely recording of the cooperative financial activities.

 

External Responsibilities — Communicates with local banking institutions, local agencies and auditors.  Provides key data to assist with the cooperative annual financial audit.  Prepares necessary reporting for external agencies.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1.      Consistently demonstrates a behavioral pattern that supports DREMC’s 11 Essential Attributes.

2.      Reconcile general ledger accounts and performs month end closing procedures.

3.      Create entries and record transactions in the General ledger and subsidiary ledgers.

4.      Prepares and posts monthly journal entries, corrections, and other adjustments, ensuring that they are properly and adequately explained and documented.

5.      Reconciles and balances cooperative bank statements.

6.      Prepares cash transfer to be electronically submitted by bank

7.      Ensures accurate posting of revenues.  Coordinates with billing on month end balancing.

8.      Ensures accuracy of the subsidiary accounts and calculates various refunds, billings, etc.

9.      Summarizes petty cash reports and records the same in the general ledger.

10.  Prepares monthly cash report and cash transfer report.

11.  Collect returned check adjustment vouchers and reconcile monthly.

12.  Prepares financial statements related to the cooperative retirement plan.

13.  Balance and record the power invoice monthly.

14.  Assists in preparing annual reports for TVA, RUS, and other external agencies.

15.  Assists with the accounts payable and plant accounting functions.

16.  Assists in developing more efficient/effective accounting processes and procedures.

17.  Special projects as assigned

18.  Emergency response coverage as needed.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education — Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required.  Commensurate experience in lieu of education will be considered.

Experience — Minimum of two (2) years of accounting, banking or office related experience required.  10 years’ experience required without a Bachelor’s degree.  Utility/RUS/FERC experience preferred.

Certification/License, etc. – Must complete the RUS borrower’s accounting course within 1 year of position.  Ability to obtain TVPPA’s financial certificate program desired.  Valid Tennessee Driver’s License or ability to obtain license prior to first day of employment is required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities — Possess knowledge of general accounting principles and practices.  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform both simple and complex mathematical calculations.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.  Must possess coordination or manual dexterity and visual acuity, as well as the ability to constantly listen and communicate orally, stand, and walk; Constantly sits, bend, stoop, squat, lift and push and/or pull, reach above shoulder level, and twist; to balance, kneel, crouch and frequently will lift and carry up to 25 to 30 pounds.
