Operations Engineer

 

Location: Smithville, TN

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Operations Engineer to join our team in the electric utility sector. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in optimizing the operational efficiency, reliability, and safety of our utility systems.  The position requires a deep understanding of utility operations, problem-solving capabilities, and strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Monitor, analyze, and optimize the performance of utility systems.

Oversee daily operations to ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

Develop, implement, and improve operational procedures to enhance system reliability and efficiency.

Conduct troubleshooting and root cause analysis for system issues, implementing corrective actions.

Maintain system mapping.

Design overhead and underground lines for subdivisions as needed.

Maintain responsibility for daily work scheduling for the outside crew and ordering materials.

Collaborate with maintenance to schedule and coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs on utility infrastructure.

Analyze data from the SCADA system, detect operational issues, and propose solutions.

Maintain responsibility for sizing transformers for residential and commercial customers.

Participate in emergency response efforts, including system restoration and troubleshooting after outages or system failures.

Ensure that all operations adhere to local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.

Provide technical support and training to enhance operational performance.

Assist in the development and implementation of projects aimed at modernizing the grid, improving sustainability, and integrating new technologies like renewable energy sources.

Prepare operational reports, metrics, and analysis for management, offering insights into performance improvements.

Coordinate with external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, contractors, and vendors, to ensure smooth operation and compliance.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, or related field.
2+ years of experience in engineering within the utility industry (preferably power generation, transmission, or distribution).
Knowledge of utility systems, substations, breakers, relays, controls, SCADA, and other industry-related software systems.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex systems and provide solutions.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with experience working cross-functionally with various stakeholders.  Previous supervisory experience is a plus.
Familiarity with regulatory requirements in the utility industry, including NERC, FERC, and OSHA standards.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Willingness to be on-call for emergencies and work in various weather conditions as required.
Experience working in the Valley and knowledge of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) operations are plusses.

Working Conditions:

Must be able to work in both office and field environments.
Availability to work outside regular hours during emergencies or critical situations.
